Victory in the Court of Appeal for the students working at Aluminerie de Bécancour Inc.

Montréal, June 17 2021 — Students working at the Aluminerie de Bécancour Inc. (ABI) were indeed victims of discrimination based on social condition, confirms a judgment of the Court of Appeal. The Court thus upheld the decision of the Human Rights Tribunal and ordered ABI to compensate the students who were paid less than regular employees simply because of their student status. ABI will also have to pay $1,000 in moral damages to each of the victims. At the time of the trial, 157 students had filed complaints and will be entitled to monetary compensation.
