Swearing-in ceremony at the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse

Four new members of the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse were sworn-in today in Montréal, by the President of the Québec National Assembly, Jacques Chagnon: Pascale Fournier, Isa Iasenza, Bruno Sioui and Gilles Fortin. A fifth member, Eva Ottawa, was sworn-in in Québec on April 15.

Montréal, April 24, 2015 — Four new members of the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse were sworn-in today in Montréal, by the President of the Québec National Assembly, Jacques Chagnon.

They are: Pascale Fournier, Isa Iasenza, Bruno Sioui and Gilles Fortin. A fifth member, Eva Ottawa, was sworn-in in Québec on April 15.

The president of the Commission, Jacques Frémont, warmly welcomed these new part-time members appointed for a five-year term. “I am confident that their expertise and their sensitivity to human rights issues and to youth rights will bring a new vigour to our team, already fully committed to upholding rights and freedoms,” he said.

He also underlined the contributions of Diane F. Raymond and Julie Desrosiers whose mandates come to an end today. He thanked them for their dedication and hard work these past years. Three positions were vacant.

Mr. Chagnon congratulated the departing and new members underlining that it is a great honour to be nominated the National Assembly and to hold such a privileged position.

Pascale Fournier is a law professor at the Law Faculty of the University of Ottawa and holds the Research Chair in Legal Pluralism and Comparative Law since 2012.

Eva Ottawa is a consultant with the educational services of the Atikamekw Band Council of Manawan. A lawyer, she also holds a sociology bachelor’s degree and was Grand Chief and President of the Atikamekw Band Council from 2006 à 2013.

Isa Iasenza holds a sociology and industrial relations Bachelor’s degree and was a management consultant with the Centre jeunesse de Montréal – Institut universitaire from 2009 to 2013. From 1994 to 2009 she was planning, programming and research officer at the Centre jeunesse de Montréal.

Gilles Fortin is a pediatrician and assistant clinical professor with the Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Medicine. He was assistant professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the Université Laval from 1974 to 2010.

Bruno Sioui is a professor with the Unité d’enseignement et de recherche en sciences du développement humain et social at the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue since 2007. He holds a Doctorate in social work and a Master’s degree in psychoeducation. He has worked at the Centre de développement et de formation de la main-d’oeuvre huron-wendat as a psychoeducator.

The 13 members of the Commission are appointed by the National Assembly on a proposal of the Premier. These nominations must be approved by two-thirds of the members. Ten of the members are appointed to serve on a part-time basis. Among them, five are chosen for their human rights expertise and five, for their expertise with youth rights.
