Risk factors (persons)

Some aged persons are more subject to abuse than others. It has been noted that the following are the main factors of vulnerability:
  • Physical, social, emotional, psychological or cultural isolation of the person;

  • Situations where a person is physically dependent on care or services, or is emotionally dependent.

  • Lost of autonomy, cognitive losses, disability.

N.B. Age of itself does not make a person vulnerable or dependent.

However, an aged person may be considered, by an eventual abuser, to be more vulnerable. One of the consequences of biases based on age is that aged persons are perceived as being weak and relatively unable to fend for themselves.

Risk factors (Long term care Centres)

  • Lack of personnel;

  • Insufficient number of available places in Long term care Centres;

  • Lack of flexibility of work organization;

  • Inadequate services in private residences;

  • Deficiencies in staff training;

  • Absence of standards in private sector residences;

  • Lack of information on elder abuse and recourse.
