In May 2012, after weeks of protest following the increase in Québec universities’ tuition fees, the National Assembly of Québec passed a special law to put an end to the student strike. Known as “Bill 78”, the Act to Enable Students to Receive Instruction from the Postsecondary Institutions they Attend (S.Q. 2012, c. 12) came into force on May 12, 2012.

The Commission has the responsibility of identifying any provision in Québec law that may be contrary to the Charter and making the appropriate recommendations to the government. As part or this mandate, it commented on Bill 78.
