SPVM's Policy on police checks: Preliminary reaction of the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse

Montréal, July 8 2020 – The Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse today presented its preliminary reaction to the publication of the SPVM's Policy on police checks. First, it notes that the wording of the policy remains ambiguous on the arrests that will be prohibited and fears that it covers only part of its recommendation on this subject. Last November, the Commission recommended that the City of Montréal definitively prohibit the unjustified stopping of pedestrians and vehicle passengers on its territory. However, the Commission salutes the SPVM's recognition of "the societal problem of systemic racism" and that social inequalities can be linked to systemic discrimination, including that within the SPVM.
