The Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse to continue its reflection on systemic discrimination and racism

Montréal, October 20, 2017 — The Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse acknowledges the decision of the Government of Québec to hold a Forum on enhancing diversity and the fight against discrimination that will focus on immigration, employment and francization.

The Commission believes, however, that systemic discrimination and racism, particularly in the areas of housing, health, social services, justice, public safety, education, culture and the media, remain within Québec society and that concrete solutions must be found. In this regard, the Commission considers essential to continue analyzing the impacts of these various issues, particularly on racialized people, including those born in Québec.

Given its mandate under the Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms, the Commission, in collaboration with the sectors and communities concerned, will continue the work initiated before the announcement of the Consultation last summer, and which the Government has now chosen to end, in order to study in depth these topics that still challenge the Québec population as a whole.

As in the past, the Commission's research and work on the matter will lead to the production of reports and recommendations to the government for the adoption of legislation or legislative and regulatory amendments, or the establishment of cooperative work to combat systemic discrimination and racism. The proposals and recommendations of the Commission may also be addressed to the various social actors concerned.
